They may have been more challenging, but the term rival is generally used to describe the antagonistic character that recurs throughout the game, which doesn't apply to May/Brendan/Wally. They just aren't prominent enough.
As for the post-game stuff, yeah, absolutely none of the "first games" get any recognition from me (except Sapphire, which gets an honorable mention for the neat storm sequence)
Kalos can't be fairly judged alongside Platinum and Emerald for example, until Z is released.
Even still, I actually really liked the Looker Quests. One of the best things about X/Y.
