The requirements for Mega Evolution should have been different.
IMO, they should have made Mega Evolution only able to be activated when the Pokemon has max friendship, or something. Sycamore himself says that he doesn't think Mega Evolution is possible, even with the items, if there's not a strong bond between the trainer and Pokemon. Clearly that's not the case, but it would have been cool if it was more about the bond and less about the items. I like the lore, but they could have made it friendship based, and easily said that it only happens in Kalos because of the weird energy from the stones on Route 10 and the sundial in Anistar.
>Mega Evolution is friendship based
>more people use Amie
>no Mega Stones means you don't know what can Mega Evolve
>have to catch and train a variety of Pokemon to find out
>can have more than one Mega in battle now
>since no Mega Stones, your Pokemon can still hold items in battle
>they lose the use of the item when Mega Evolving
>can throw curveballs at your opponent by Mega Evolving and freeing yourself from the effects of Choice items
>Mega Stones and Mega Ring are saved for future games
>"This Mega Stone was made from an odd rock in the Kalos region. When this Mega Stone resonates with this Mega Ring and your Pokemon, Evolution is taken a step further."
>a cool feature is brought back smoothly, and in such a way that people won't cry about continuity
