I played Pokemon lots in my childhood but I don't think I've ever played correctly. I always just plowed through the game with my starter. It was always easy until I got to the Elite 4, where I usually faced problems (sometimes won, sometimes didn't).

But I guess when playing you're supposed to raise a team, raise several pokemon at once, right? I've never understood that. If you don't grind (this game doesn't require grinding, right?) then won't your team always be pretty low leveled? Or is the key simply all about type strength/weaknesses?

I've never got how to raise a team without it feeling tedious. I feel like I've been missing something. Any help? If I get X and Y it's something I want to correct.
