Do people play on shift? I always turn text speed to max, turn animations off and set battles to set whenever I start a pokemon game. Shift was useful for training stuff I guess but with exp share, 6 lucky eggs and everyone at 2 hearts in amie thats pretty much pointless now.

If I'm doing a nuzlocke or I'm planning to make the game even remotely challenging for me, then obviously Set.
If I'm just playing for the sake of completing the pokedex and I just want to get through the game quickly, then Shift because there's no point in not having it.

It also gives a sense of realism to battles, a Pokémon trainer is not supposed to tell you what he's gonna let out so you can have its counter beforehand...

I like the way Pure White/Pitch Black tells you how it's send out another Pokemon instead of telling the name. Much better as it's more realistic that way.

Any other romhacks that does that shit?

I think they mean that the prompt would come up and allow you to switch, but wouldn't tell you which pokemon would be coming in, allowing you to have the type advantage right off the bat.
