Why do a lot of college-aged Trainers think it's weird, or even pathetic, for someone older than them to play Pokémon?

Nobody really laughs at other people for their tastes anymore. We are adults and live on in the era of homo acceptance , multiculturalism, nerds being cool, NEETs, anything going.
The biggest reaction you could get for liking Pokémon at a very old age is curiosity "do you really have time for that?" And then they forget about it the next minute.

I've come back to pokemon and nintendo because it took years of shitty and repetitive fps to make me realize I enjoy the tried and tested nintendo brand games and they're often quirky and semi timeless appeal

Why are your friends so shitty?

23, when I told my 28 friend about Hoenn remakes he got very excited. Pokémon are great games, there's nothing wrong with playing them no matter the age.

I'm no good at explaining shit but just because they're not into competitive doesn't mean they need your help. It's a pride thing too, you don't accept "help" from somebody who's beaten you. You can help them by giving them Pokémon with decent IVs.

VGC is his thing, you don't challenge a chess player to checkers.

It goes both ways then, any time he challenges me its "hey do you want to do a double battle?" even though I prefer singles and thats mostly all I get out of him, I at least give it a try every once in a while and when I offer a singles once, he always declines.

I only have one friend who plays pokemon, he's decently good at the game, he is kind of competitive he understands how everything works but he's too lazy to actually breed/EV train on cart. I breed him some pokemon and give him some of my breeding/Shiny hunting leftovers and sometimes EV train his pokemon for him because I can do it really quickly with horde battles. Somehow I always beat him though, even though I use mostly UU and below pokemon.

No one has ever said anything negative about Pokemon from my experience of university. I discuss and play it in lecture and I usually get Pokemon playing Streetpasses on campus.

This has been my experience too. Sometimes I'll see Passerby on campus and trade them pentaperfects of what I'm currently breeding. Most of my classmates in the teaching credential program play as well, and we usually seduce others into joining in. It's also pretty awesome when my 9-12 grade students go apeshit when they realize I play. Though I've noticed that my 9th graders prefer Gen 1 Pokemon and only like the Indigo League part of the anime, while people my age like the newer gens.
