The only generation I skipped was black/white, hence "haven't played in years', soul silver being the last I played before X

Shinies actually didn't exist in gen 1, however in pokemon stadium games the colorations could differ due to the nicknames on the AI teams so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
Officially shinies started in gen 2

I found my first shiny in silver, it was a blue electrode in the power plant while doing the shit with lance. My second was a shroomish in diamond.

Pikachu in X is my third in my life, and I've played since red/blue
