Gen 2 was fairly easy, cant remember any difficult battles
Wattson was probably hardest for me with his magneton which could resist everything (never used a fire type even now) and that fucking Manectric which is overlevelled and outspeeds everything.

Because there are so many of them available before Whitney.

You've got Machop and nothing else.To be a high enough level to be useful the Machop has to not be obeying you. Also not many people knew about the Machop trade back when the games first came out

You can get Heracross before Whitney? The guide I had as a kid said you could only get it on by headbutting on that route by Mt Mortar.

This guide was filled with Professor Oak tips though

Seriously, nearly all gyms had a Pokemon that could beat it near the gym. Geodude was Whitney's counter.
