Weird question: does anyone know why Smogon doesn't use an item clause? It's only slightly annoying to face a team of six Leftovers holders, much less so than fighting evasion unprepared, but I'm still curious.

Because smogon like to copy paste entire sets, items included. An item clause would make team creation too hard.

Because under their rules there's only a small handful of items worth using: Leftovers/Black Sludge, the choice items, and the Life Orb.

Those are just the most efficient items. Leftovers is so much better than the healing berries, and the choice items/lorb are so much better than the gems.

Item clause is a relatively new invention, on;line metas predate it and never cared to adopt it.

Item clause was a thing way before gen vi. I'm just not sure if was part of the main smogon metagames.

They really should bring it back. Most teams could handle it fine and just turn into

>choice item
>expert belt

Only one of the above that might not fit in the average team is expert belt, but you could replace it with light clay or whatever one gimmick set your team has.
