What if there was a main-series Pokemon game where you could say "no" to the NPCs and get to the Pokemon League your own way?
Better yet, what if you could be the bad guys for once?

If you mean the game should be less linear and let you meander across the region in any direction... then yes.

To make the bad guys joinable, they'd have to make them not suck. And this is Game Freak we're talking about.

Not really; you don't ever get to use the snag balls on anything but shadow pokemon, and you are still constricted to do what the NPC characters tell you too.
You don't even get to see what you were doing before stealing the snag 'em machine either.

That's a nice head cannon, but it probably didn't happen. There is no word of either of the main characters in XD (or any other pokemon game, for that matter,) and by the end of Colosseum he seems to have pulled the whole "turned-a-new-leaf" thing.

Well, more Morrowind/Oblivion, but yeah, it would be nice to have a more "open" pokemon game that isn't a new Mystery Dungeon game.
Doesn't even need to be an arena rpg either, same game and same game play.
Instead, though, we get how to draw pokemon edition and detective picachu.
