Right now, it looks like he split up some of the characters in order for the series to look like there's more padding. So now the Zelda series has 5 characters; Link, Zelda, Toon Link, Shiek and likely Ganondorf. That'd put it on par with Mario and Pokemon who'll end up having the most (and those are the 3 largest series for Nintendo)
The Metroid series has never been a huge seller and they're not gonna add some other shit in there (and not Dark Samus now that its a AT) so they split up Samus into regular and Zero Suit. More padding for the series.
Now, there's no limit to spots but it seem unlikely that they're going to be doing more than 5 reps for a series. They could still add more (reveal at E3) or whatever but its seems unlikely at this point.
