You're supposed to hid behind em right? give you time to set up or switch out without fear.

but with 1/4th of a pokemons HP even one with obscene HP, ive never been able to get one to stick around long enough to buy me even one free turn. pest possible outcome, your opponent wastes one PP.

So what the fuck is the deal? i KNOW substitue is a good move, i KNOW its super meta and everyone uses it.

so how the hell do you use it properly?

It's used often when a switch or a status move is predicted. That way the opponent has a wasted turn and you're free to do whatever you want in the sub. Also it puts pressure on the opponent to attack and it can throw off their momentum.

You use Substitute if 1. You are faster and expect a status move to be used. 2. You are slower and you expect a switch. 3. You are bulky enough for the sub to take at least one hit before fading
If you can get the Sub up, then you're safe from anything that isn't Infiltrator or a forced switch for at least a turn

I used to baton pass really hearty ones along side lots of defence boosts.
If I played my cards right, it was really hard for them to get rid of.
Though that takes too long, so playing my cards right involves a lot of them playing their cards wrong.

A- Things that can do nothing to it or very little. You'll have to read up on how that particular pokemon you're teaching sub to matches up against the whole metagame to learn what gives you the green flag on subbing.

As a side note you must also be wary of matchups where they can have movesets that make subs ok or a moveset that is not safe to set up on

You must also not use a sub at a point in the game where you can't get anything off from pulling it off because of an opponents team mate waiting in the wings that can stop you even if you set up.
