Why does hardly anybody use this beast? Highest defence and special defence in game. With double team he becomes nearly inmortal.

I prefer the toxic-sand storm strategy, against an enemy without inmunity to poison is deadly. And double team, protect and leftovers to defend and recover hp. This thing can cause a lot of havoc.

Shuckle is a beast in triple battles when located in the middle with Contrary as ability while holding leftovers, power split, helping hand, shell smash and toxic he can quite effectively buff and debuff your temamates and foes.

Shame he gets raped in single battles.

Shuckle is outclassed defensively. Chansey has better special bulk and even marginally better physical bulk if Shuckle does not invest in Defense. The only reason you would use shuckle is as a pseudo deoxys-defense suicide lead, with sticky web and stealth rock.
Oh, and chansey also outclasses shuckle at evasion, since it has minimize.

You take even more physical damage if you invest like that. You neeed to invest in shuckle's hp.

how should I run a contrary shell smash shuckle though? still 252 hp, 252 def/sp.def, or should I go straight into defenses to buff them crazy high?

Just invest in the defense which matters more

Assuming Battle Spot, you'll want more Physical bulk to tank Mega Kanga and Garchomp hits better while you set up
