I can understand Mega Charizard X, but why did Game Freak push Mega Mewtwo Y over Mega Mewtwo X?

Is solely because these two are more drastic changes than their counterparts?

Mega Mewtwo X's design is inferior to Mega Mewtwo Y's design.
Mega Charizard Y's design is inferior to Mega Charizard X's design.

Mewtwo hasn't been sucked off as much as Charizard, though. Charizard gets it's own TCG set, it's appearance in Smash 4, Pokemon origins, a special one of a kind 3DS, and it's the main role of the Mega Evolutions specials.

Mewtwo got a movie and one special.

playing up the psychic level to a higher one is much easier than jumping to a fighting type mewtwo which really defies the largely non physical power mewtwo weilds

its an easier leap and mewtwo x is a bit weird looking

It's resembles the original more than Y does and as for the whole Mewtwo kids thing, I reckon they would have preferred X because they get their Psychic powerhouse along with the hyper shounen physical slug-fest.
The fact of the matter is though that Y was most likely made first as was X Zard.

God the more I look at megazard X the more I hate it. It's literally just shoving a bunch of retarded concepts that kids lap the fuck up like candy and prioritizes guaranteed pandershit cashjewing over sensible design. Those wings look flat out incapable of anything, The shoulder spikes are hideously tacked on, the claws remain hilariously wimpy in spite of the fact that his ability is tough claws, and the blue fire coming out of the mouth s a constant fixture is so trite. It;s just so criminally uninspired that you know there was no concept behind it other than 'we need megas to sell'.
