I think we can all agree Mega Sceptile's ability is a bit on the strange side, but I think I've got it figured out.

He's going to be Ash's Mega in the show. Lightningrod makes him a perfect partner for Pikachu in doubles, lets Ash have a Mega without needing to invent Pikachuite, and gives Sceptile the typing he needs to fight on even footing with Alan's Charizard.

doesn't..doesn't lightning rod draw all electric attacks to it? so, Pikachu would end up continuing to hit Sceptile?

That's kind of the point, Pikachu would hit Sceptile, but it wouldn't get any damage and would get more and more powerful.

This would be legitimately amazing and I'd definitely take it as a motivation to get back into the anime, but the sad truth is that the writers are probably just going to continue pandering to Charizard fans and have Ash get the Y Mega Evolution or something.

Though this could help sales of OR/AS, so who knows?

My biggest problem with the anime is that the writers essentially alienate their older Pokemon fans.
