On a side note, I recently learned that it's actually possible to make body armor and helmets out of cotton rags. "Vulcanized Fibre", as it's called, is a polymer made purely out of cellulose, and the only chemical used in the process can be re-used after the process is finished. Essentially, it's like what hapens when you press layers of toilet paper together, then dip them in water and keep pressing; when they dry, they form into a denser, solid layer.
