The tail was already mostly off-screen even before being launched, while Mega Sceptile's head wasn't even in the top half of the frame. After the tail fires, there's a few seconds of delay before the camera pans to show the target being struck, at which point the tail would be long gone regardless.
I don't know why they didn't position the camera to give us a better look at this snazzy attack animation they went through the trouble of designing for Mega Sceptile alone.
