I prefer it this way. 3DS models are cool for their reactions after the battle, but they're just so fucking ugly compared to the official artworks.

I'd rather have them work on more important stuff than a 3d model you are going to see for 4 seconds.

Also, if the leaders show up in the chateau (or battle frontier/pwt/whatever) it'd look inconsistent for them to have 3d models and not the other trainers.

FR/LG used the R/S engine
HG/SS used the D/P/Pt engine

Both the 3D overworld models and the artwork are in the game - which is brilliant. They could have just used the 3D model instead of artwork in the 'You are challenged' frame - which would have looked shit.
