Depends, is the natural obstacle believable? Because if it isn't I would prefer the gates and considering Mauville is the city of Hoenn that pretty much promotes science I would find that a little more reasonable.
Anyway there doesn't seem to be any gate like structures aside from that, if it's even a gate

That's a part of the game where I see it being appropriate.

Also at the entrance to Lillycove, although I don't know why I think so. Maybe it's just because I always saw it as being too jarring to go from nearly pure wilderness to straight-up city.

The nice thing about Hoenn is that it has a lot of natural gates or opportunities for them. Caves, Forests, etc. They all load in a new map.

The square water confirms the map will be made up of tiles, correct? So what the fuck is so hard about dynamically loading and dropping tiles as you cross certain boundaries? This is how it worked in RSE, and all that happened was the game paused a few frames when you entered a new map. Given the speed of the 3DS processor, there's no reason it wouldn't work.

There's no good reason to implement gates. If they do, I'll be pissed.

I've heard the reason the frame drops so much in battle is because the Pokemon models have unnecessarily high polycounts. If that's true, they could fix a lot of problems by just removing some detail in their models. It's not like it makes much of a difference on that 240p screen.

It's a trick question, the only improvement in those games was the surf speed. Everything else was the same possibly even slightly worse because of the framerate drops that didn't exist in D/P.

The overworld was at 30 but the battles were at 60 I believe.
It did drop frames during triple and rotation battles occasionally if you had certain pokemon out.

If Mauville will be this versions's Lumiose (Electric gym, potential to be huge city at crossroads), then it'd need gates to load properly.
Original didn't need it since it loaded small stuff, even for the GBA.

I'm okay with gates if that means smooth sailing.
About the egg hatching route: Mauville might have a circular route, perhaps without a middle.

That being said: while I like the brighter, more vivid colors, holy shit they should have stuck with the route design in X/Y. all those curved, contoured, natural-looking paths were great, why would you give us sharp angles and squares now?

yeah thats the feeling im getting from what i see.it'll probably be the most redesigned thing from the originals and be the largest city in the region. wich would make sence beacuase the casino attracts tourism and mauville is known for technology. plus it's central location will act like a crossroads like you said. im pretty excited to see what they have planned for it

Gates are the short buildings in between cities/routes that exist mainly to allow for the game to load the area you're entering.

Not gates, Mauville just got a redesign that is a mix of New Mauville and old one, plus like in every game it's central city of the region, big or not needed something to be on the same level of the othe similar one that offer access to at least 4 routes. Mauville looks to have a great wall defending it, I don't know some Wattson's bullshit.
