where does Ethan's name come from

I know Gen 3 and beyond, you see the other character's name cause the other gender appears in game

All the other pre-3 characters gets their names from the title of the version, but doesn't Ethan get called "Gold?"

Ethan is officially unnamed in Gen II. The Crystal and FRLG girls are also unnamed, though they're prolly Marina and Green/Blue, respectively. The Gen II rival is also unnamed, even in HGSS.
