XY made it incredibly easy to trade and battle with a wide range of people anywhere in the world without being restricted to friendlists or the GTS. It also makes sense for each player to have their own world to play in, on their own, with the ability to trade or battle globally, rather than every single player being shoved into the same world and then having to trade and battle locally.
