Diamond is the first Pokemon game that I feel I truly experienced.
My parents didn't have a lot of money when I was a kid, so I never got to play Red or Silver except when I was with my friends. I started playing third gen, but I don't know, guess it doesn't resonate with me as much as DP?
I definitely remember picking Piplup. It was a Sunday, April 22, I had just gotten the game and we were in a mexican restaurant with my grandparents. I got bullied a lot in school for my sexuality and religion and I lost all my friends because of it. The few people who still talked to me were losers like me who spent lunch hour playing Pokemon. DP wasn't my first game, but it was my defining pokemon experience.
