We're getting a 3DS for a kid for his 8th birthday. He's a big fan of pokemon and he got to Indigo Plateau in Green Leaf, playing in an emulator.

Should we get a 3DS, a 3DS XL or a 2DS?

Get him a 3DS. Not too big for his small delicate 8 year old hands, like a 3DSXL. The 2DS looks retarded, but I would consider it if this kid is clumsy and typically drops things.

Depending on the kid either 3DS or 2DS.

The 3DS looks better and you can close it to put it in your pocket.
The 2DS is harder to break, for example my brother broke in half my DS while playing with it.

2DS' design isn't that likeable though, try asking the kid in question, if it's a surprise do one of those tricks to get the answer without telling him.

Yeah, I believe the 3DS XL is the real thing because my hands are bigger and I don't like the Power button of the original 3DS (for some retarded reason I kept pressing it by mistake). I don't like the retractable pencil either.

We thought the 2DS was the natural choice, but this kid is actually not that careless and while the non-foldable thing and the monoaural speaker are passable, I have my doubts about a permanent non 3D screen.

Not that the 3D stuff is that great, I barely used it in Zelda Between Worlds.

In that case you might just want to go for a 3DS yeah. Personally I doubt the 3D really effects kids, and it's still a neat factor. Survivability would've been my biggest concern.

3DS vs 3DS XL would probably come down to the price I think. The XL is pretty much just better.

Not sure what you mean. I'm in my thirties and choose the XL because of the size. In fact, while I loved the Gameboy Advance SP, I recognized that I had some trouble putting my hands around such a small console.
If I had small hands, I would go for the classic 3DS.

3D messes with their eyes and they tend to be less careful with their consoles so not having a hinge makes it less likely that it'll break.

They're all meant to be played by kids, yes, but the 2Ds is even more suitable for that.

I'm gessing here as obviously I don't know what your sister's kid is like but if he's the sort of kid that would get given games consoles by his uncle/aunt he may be the sort of child that doesn't realise the true value of things.

For example when I was a kid we had in our circle of friends a similarly spoilt brat called Andrew. One day Andrew was given an Atari ST by his father (this being the late 80s when they first came out, were expensive and looked like they might be an amiga beater). That might have been fine if it given as a birthday present or something but this was just a random gift and this sort of thing happened all the time to Andrew. Anyway about a week later we were all at Andrew's house and playing Treasure Island Dizzy. Unfortunately one of us completed the game and Andrew saw red because he hadn't been the first person to complete the game and accused us all of cheeting. When we started laughing at his faggotry he picked up the Atari ST and started to smash it against his desk in a fit of rage. The computer was of course destroyed and we made our excuses and left. Next day at school he invited us round for the weekend as his dad had picked him up a new Atari ST after work. He saw nothing wrong with his behaviour and the distruction of what at the time was an expensive computer.

You should be very careful the boy doesn't turn out like that as it can happen easily if they get showered with expensive gifts.

He actually likes to play those horrible Mario & Sonic games (Winter Olympics and stuff). Oh, he barely touches the Wii when he's alone, he prefers multiplayer games. He usually plays with his mother at Party Games.

I believe by now that the classic 3DS is the best choice.
We'll try to take the kid to a Nintendo store to check his feedback on the matter.

Asking this here since it's related and I don't want to make my own thread just to ask.

At what age should I buy my daughter a handheld system?
Currently she's two and a half but is extremely intelligent when it comes to using smart phone.

I was thinking maybe when she is four I'd try getting her into it. She hasn't seen my 3DS because I fear for its safety since she's still so young. Constantly taking her mother's phone.

If you do do it at such a young age, at least limit it.

There's actually been no studies that show the 3D can damage children's eyes. The whole "not for ages 7 and under" is a preventative thing, in case it actually does. Even then you can disable it in parental controls.
