Geckos and other lizards shed their tails when threatened, then regrow them. I think that's the concept here though I hope it's fleshed out more so it looks a bit more natural.

guys its uh...just a glitch.
There was some in the original XY trailer. Remember the glasses gettings stuck? I think a Pokemon clipped through the grass too..Pikachu maybe or something.

It's a glitch because it simply DISAPPEARED.

Wrong.
There's one frame where the bulbs got enlarged.
There's another where the tip of the tail can be seen after its launched. The only one missing is the tail severed but that might be on purpose because it would look gross/too graphic.
