His characterization in the Johto games makes him seem kind of
autistic. Like in the actual "no social skills, distant personality, obsessive" sort of way. Kid lives in a mountain and trains his Pokémon all day, doesn't even talk to his mother much, clearly doesn't give a shit about being Champion.
The characterization of Hilbert/Hilda in their cut appearance from BW2 makes them seem like friendly versions of Red. They go on about how Pokémon Battles are the best way to understand each other and how the player should use Pokémon to follow/find their dreams/ideals/truth.
It's like they're representing how Pokémon is actually supposed to help everyone make friends and come together, and Red is the guy who misses the point and just wants to catch them all and train them to "be the very best" and "win" the game.
