I still remember when Pokemon Advance came out and everything was so new.

It was the first time Ash and Brock were in new outfits, the first time Ash left all his Pokemon behind, the first time we got a new female main character...

How come none of the newer series really bother to do anything new anymore

With the constant stream of kids growing up and new kids coming in, the anime is constantly getting a new audience. None of the target audience today has probably seen anything from before 2009 or so, probably even later.

OP, I'm definitely agreeing with you on this.

The entire Advanced Generation arc of the Pokemon Anime was fantastic.

It felt like a breath of fresh air after Johto's repetitiveness. Ash finally wasn't the idiot anymore, May was a rookie coordinator looking for guidance (which Ash delivered), Max was younger tag along sibling for shenanigans, while Brock watched all three prosper.

Heck, this arc was so good, that even the XY Anime resembles it to the point where I'd call it "AG 2.0".

The overall progression, the varying plots, and whatnot were really nice.

My only disappointment was that the Magma/Aqua arc was horrendously handled, and the fact that Battle Frontier, although great in its own right, missed some key cameo opportunities, such as his old Pidgeot, or Butterfree, or maybe even seeing some old characters like the Samurai Kid, and whatnot.

Lastly, the AG saga had some cool openings, and an amazing soundtrack to boot.

Ash's AG outfit is the only one to appear in three series: Original, AG and DP. Doesn't mean anything but it's a pretty neat fact.

Actually its kind of weird, after seeing Ash in his new outfits seeing him in his AG one likes strange.

When I was in elementary school, I was obsessed with Pokemon anything--the cards, the anime, the games. Even some of the shitty toys. Then in middle school I renounced everything Pokemon because it was for babies. During my first or second year of high school, Diamond and Pearl were announced, and I decided to get back into the series by playing Emerald. It was at this time that I discovered the battling community, the hidden mechanics like IVs, and all that. As I started to get back into Pokemon, I decided to start watching the anime again, when the Diamond and Pearl series debuted. Needless to say, I only got a couple episodes in before I couldn't bear watching anymore.

I watched the original anime back in 2001 without playing the video games.

Dropped Pokemon for 6 years until I played Emerald on a emu, got all the games after that. Started watching the Sinnoh saga around the same time.

Still gotta watch the Johto & Hoenn anime fully.

Don't bother with it. There were a few gems but it was really long, and really boring. They spend like 20 episodes between towns and Brock and Misty were just walking pieces of background.

While Sinnoh was just as long, at least its episodes were fun.

Just watch the league.

Out of all of the leagues, it was the best one, considering it wrapped up the Ash and Gary rivalry, and that it paved the way to Hoenn.
