It's implied (announcement and description on official website) that Mega Aerodactyl is how Aerodactyl was originally before dying, becoming a fissil and being revived.

Is it going to be retconned as Ancient Devolution or GF doesn't give a fuck?

To me Mega evolution is like how the Pokémon is supposed/able to evolve (I mean as a normal evolution), but we don't know the method yet.

Example: Pikachunite makes Pikachu Mega Evolve to Mega Pikachu that is the same as Raichu, but only until the battle is over/dies.

About Aerodactyl, it's confirmed that SCIENTISTS (in Pokéworld) think that it's as it was originally when he was alive before revival. So yeah, Game Freak is not going to change anything, since the blame would be on fictional scientists.

This. Primal Reversion has something to do with natural energy. It's not a real devolution. They just revert to their state when they had more natural energy inside.

Mega Aerodactyl may be the original Aerodactyl, but it need Mega Stone energy to revert to his state.

This would have saved many cancer threads with people complaining about Mega Evolution just being a form change and not deserving the "evolution" part.

Also it would explain why weak and stage1-like Pokémon are getting Mega Evolutions and not proper evolution from a LORE point of view: we can't discover how to evolve them (we couldn't up until now so it's not possible anymore probably) so we use Mega Stone energy that comes from Yveltal and Xerneas.

It's probably just implied that both have to do with some kind of energy or that the Mega bracelet activates the Reversion because it's the same natural energy.

Ancient Reversion probably uses natural energy inside Ruby and Sapphire Orbs, while normal Mega Evolution uses the energy from Diancie/Yveltal/Xerneas/Idontknow/Idon'tgiveafuck.

Mega Evolution -> energy comes from another Pokémon/source
Ancient Devolution -> energy comes from the same Pokémon who lost it inside the Orb.

Reminder that Fossils are ROCKS and have little to no actual DNA in them.
Autistic headcanon incoming
Fossil Pokemon aren't "revived", I prefer to think of it like Jurassic Park+Sheep Cloning. Fossils are found, and an estimation is made of what they looked like when alive. Then they combine DNA from existing Pokemon and create the closest they can get to what they theorize they looked like. By the same method used to clone a sheep, they could remove all the DNA from a Pokemon egg cell and replace it with the genes extracted from other Pokemon's cells. Then they take the fused cell and implant it in a surrogate Pokemon of the same egg group, fertilize it, and see if the hatched Pokemon looks like what they wanted. They would try different combinations of genes, like a Grovyle spine, Charizard wings, Houndoom tails, etc. until they got a single finished organism with the right specifications. Like evolution taking place in a matter of months. After they got a basic idea, they could mass produce Fossil Pokemon, given they have a base fossil to infuse to give it its Rock Typing. That's why Fossils are necessary and they can't just make them from scratch. Based on what we've seen in the anime, their theories were accurate, and "revived" Fossil Pokemon are nearly identical to natural prehistoric Pokemon. It's entirely possible that there were two species of Aerodactyl, one rocky and one sleek, the former native to Kalos and the latter Kanto.

But because it's a kids game, none of this matters. They can bypass our logic and turn rocks into flesh.

We don't know what's in the Old Amber. Could be a blood sucking organism, could be a piece of flesh, could be a bone.
In Jurassic Park, dinosaurs were made with blood from ancient mosquitoes and crocodiles (frogs in the movie), which is why they were reptilian as opposed to bird-like.
If you go by the Jurassic Park method, it makes sense that the DNA extracted could be combined with other Pokemon to recreate an Aerodactyl. If Aerodactyl's true appearance was rocky, it wouldn't need a fossil. It already had the Rock-Type gene in its blood. The others may have also, but who knows. Based on its skeleton, either Aerodactyl could make sense as the original so the recreation and Mega Evolution can be seen as accurate.
