The way the Gym Leaders did stuff outside their Gyms and showed up in the story's climax. Kalos's leaders were a huge disappointment after that.

Completely agree. I loved that gym leaders were actually people, and had some development to them. Kalos literally only focused on Korrina, and somewhat Wulfric, and that was it.
