Glad Baton Pass as a playstyle is pretty much dead. Despite scrubs' cries that baton pass is banned, it only got nerfed. I'm interested to see how people will confront/conform to the new rule.

Challenge: come up with an effective baton pass team that doesn't have more than three members with baton pass.

This is the team I plan on using for the next competition. I'm still deciding on two Pokemon. One of them needs to have Quick Guard.
Also, Gengar may be using Lefties instead of its mega stone.

Tott: Baton pass chains are gay and i'm kinda happy that they are gone, even though i don't think the ban was really urgent, i would have preferred more broken things being suspected first, but oh well, next suspect round is going to fix the meta, r-right?

Ehhhh Bp was nice but anyone who was well prepared could beat it or stall it out. And most faggots couldn't even run it correctly. But no longer being forced to run fucking quagsire/amoongus at 1700-1800+ is p nice as well.

I was thinking about making a new team based around M-Blastoise and Aegislash, but I need a solid Talonflame counter.
I was thinking maybe Rotom-W/H, or Tyranitar, but that would create the need for mons that can take advantage of the sand.

Sure maybe you'll find some wonky strategies in low elo, but those players are bad enough to be stuck in low elo to begin with.
If you're stuck in low elo because you can't get past weird un-meta strategies and decisions then you certainly don't belong in high elo where people have shit figured out more than you do.

Because you can't gauge people's skill in low Elo. Sure, most of them are shit, but there's the occasional gud player with a new alt who just started steamrolling the ladder, which really catches you off guard and forces you to change your playstyle.

Fletchling is pretty good as a revenge killer (strongest priority move in the tier unboosted, iirc).

Berry Juice shell smashers are also really good, but more people use SR nowadays.

Pawniard + Missy is nice I guess but mienfoo. It was better during meditite era as that could easily beat mienfoo

Major forces are probably drilbur offense team with strong attackers, memento is p nice too, there aren't really any "dominant forces" as you can make a lot of things good, but generally offensive balance ~ offense is the way to go

personally i don't think either really matters. venu doesn't have priority and can't do much to you unless hp fire, and you're already slow so being para'd by booboo keys isn't as big of a deal + you're immune to burn now + booboo keys isn't that common. i'd concentrate on balk and dommage.

Guess I misinterpreted the term. I'm relatively new to PO, so I suppose my post was at least partially a legitimate question. I just recently started laddering as well and I won about 3/4 of my games up to ~1450 elo without much pain involved. Is "elo hell" a satire term?

Elo hell is a bit of a misnomer (albeit intentional).

I started using the term mainly in showderp and other chatrooms on PS, but I didn't really think it'd get so big. The term must have caught on. The main reasons I chose the name Elo Hell for low level ladder is because:
1. Elo hell is funnier and more fun to say than low level ladder
2. The creation of a lower level elo cap means that everyone will see crazy shit on ladder, not just people intentionally reverse laddering
3. Weird sets can result in a sudden loss for a player
4. Trying to predict against opponents in lower ladder is difficult, and can ruin your prediction skills
5. what the other anons have said

We won't get a real Elo hell until multibattles are implemented, but I still think it's a more fun way to talk about the low ladder

ToTT: holy shit i haven't been paying attention to OU suspects closely but i CAN'T BELIEVE they limited bp to 3 mons per team instead of just banning speed boost + bp, which is the OBVIOUS cause of bp becoming op as hell this gen. bp+ speed boost is already banned on shit like combusken in the lowest tiers, so i'm kind of in shock that they didn't immediately realize how much of a problem it is when the bp team can automatically outspeed and have switch priority over the other team without even using a turn to boost speed

I'm planning on obtaining a Heatran for a team I'm in the middle of building, and I'm trying to decide what nature to give it. Right now I'm planning its partners to be Azumarill, and Mega-Sceptile once ORAS finally comes out. Basically, my issue is, I don't know if I want a defensive nature like Calm so I can soak up hits for my frailer mons, or if I want an offensive nature like Modest so Heatran can dish out as much as it can. Overheating enemy Aegislash/M-Mawile/Amoongus/other Fire weak mons is far more useful than Hydro Pumping them.

Since you're using Sash, you want Spin/Defog support. Since you're supporting an offensive sweeper that isn't guaranteed OHKOs, get hazard support.
Find what counters FS Breloom/mons you can't beat; put in counters to deal with them.

Basic team:
Breloom/Hazards/SpinFog/BreloomCounterCounter/BreloomCounterCounter/Free Slot

Some roles may overlap (Breloom struggles with Talonflame/etc; many Rock types can also set up hazards).

For the free slot, I suggest an offensive mon that complements your Breloom offensively; this may overlap with a BreloomCounterCounter slot.

Hey guys, programmerfag here. I've been playing around with analysis of OU and VGC, and have been using it to calculate some things, such as most-effective type coverage sets weighted for usage of opposing Pokemon. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas for things I could calculate with all this information. I've got all the information about the Pokemon (type/stats/abilities/items/learnsets), as well as some usage statistics from showdown. My initial idea was to use a genetic algorithm to build a showdown AI, but before that, I wanted to know if you guys had any ideas on what this sort of information could be used to calculate. Thoughts?

You can graph trends of particular pokemon/movesets, maybe even predict how the meta will change if x move/pokemon is banned

Usage statistics are up on Smogon, you can look up what the most common Pokemon are there. As far as what the best anti-meta team would be, that's pretty hard to nail down. I would need a way to be able to look at a team of Pokemon, and then somehow get a value from that that would signify effective the team would be. If you can come up with something like that, I can test it (probably).

Again, usage statistics are on Smogon. I can track the change in movesets/items/EVspreads/etc by comparing data from previous data dumps though. Would anyone be interested in a program that would display something like that for a given species?

Prediction of meta-changes would be a lot more analysis than I know how to do, unless you can detail a specific way of measuring it.

It existed in 5th gen but we don't have it anymore and it makes team building much harder

I'd exchange Mandibuzz for a ground type with Rock Slide/Stone Edge and Rapid Spin, personally. You might not even need a de-hazarder, really. Charizard's your only rock weak mon, and with a less-weak mega form, roost, and a set that doesn't lend itself to switching out anyway, you might be able to get along with out.

The set I liked running back in Diamond and Pearl was Earthquake/Cross Chop/Ice Punch/Thunder Punch. It's got some really good coverage. You can replace Thunder Punch with Volt Tackle now, and it might get some other interesting moves.

Choice Band is the only that will let Electivire knock out most opponents, as long as they're not faster, and I'm pretty sure no one will fall for Motor Drive.
