When pocking characters from a franchise like pokemon, the worst thing you can do is divide the fucking audience.
Do you think pokemon mystery dungeon would have been fun if you could only pick from the most popular starters in each gen to be the protagonist?
You can't appeal to everyone with neutral choices on the roster but at least you won't piss anybody off.
Starters have the most effect out of all choices because the majority of people identify with whichever starter pokemon they pick. It is a pokemon that most people keep throughout the game and its most of the time, the players strongest pokemon. this is why starters are the worst additions to the roster unless:
Its a pokemon fighting game and you include ALL of them
You do something like pokemon trainer
You add 3 different starters of the 3 different types each with a different sttereotype: so a middle of the road, speed and muscle (in other words not sceptile).
You add three from the same region.
Charizard is blatant charizard pandering and Greninja is an equally biased choice, granted, from a different perspective.
