I myself, and I know lots of people in the same situation, just started hunting shinies when I got bored of the games and was completely finished while looking for more things to do. So I started looking for shinies in my spare time. I like doing it because A) boredom and B) they're the kind of things that you always keep transferring to every single game there after.
They're kinda fun in the sense you don't need to put much thought into it, you can just sit there watching tv or browsing online while using your free hand to hunt, you don't even need to look at the screen, just absentmindedly listen for the sound. I mean when there's nothing else to do in the game, why not? I know a lot of people who think like this.
... In saying that though I wouldn't be like the guy in one of the links posted above who bought the game and wouldn't start it for 5 months because he felt like SRing for a shiny starter. Just what. Play the game first and restart it after or something if you really wanna do that. That seems full autist.
