835 episodes. Some of those episodes are 2, maybe 3 parts, plus the tournaments which take 5 or more episodes usually. Even then, there are 365 days in a year, and if we can assume the episodes are Ash's day by day adventures, Ash has only been traveling for somewhere in between 2 to 3 years.

Not to mention at the end of every saga, they always say it's x amount of time to the league, and how in BW, at least some months passed due to the seasons changing. (evidenced by Deerling and Sawsbuck forms) However, the latter may prove to be inconsistent since the amount of time it was spring is much shorter than it was summer in Unova.

What do all of these shows have in common? They're just a random comedy. Not intended to be one long story arc. Pokemon is. Or at least it's supposed to be. Pokemon is a cartoon. "Anime" is not an east vs west thing, it's a genre to which Pokemon does not belong. There are western animes and there are Japanese cartoons. Pokemon is a Japanese cartoon, not an anime.
