I think it's because they don't want gyms to have cannon fodder + two good mons (Hi Blaine, Jasmine) but why not just make more good mons?

People who don't care about the main game should probably stick to the simulators if all they care about is competitive battling.

The region was bland, the 'rivals' were bad, gyms/trainers felt worse compared to the other games (other being 3,4,5), champion was eh.

Overall, the best things to come out were the Looker quests and breeding mechanics. That's all I can say good came out of Gen 6 so far.

The only viable explanation I have is that they wanted to balance the experience gain with Lucky Egg (gen V) and Exp Share (gen VI) factored in. This would also explain why most trainers don't carry more than 4 Pokemon anymore - trainer-owned Pokemon give more experience than the wild ones.
