I can't believe it's been 4 years since the hype for Black and White. Soon it'll be generation VII in 2 or 3 years and generation V will feel like forever. Generation IV felt forever. Generation II and I didn't last long. As for III it's in between the train tracks.

To be fair, BW were a pretty big departure from Gen4 in terms of character/story/gameplay/setting and whatnot. They were some of the freshest games the series has had in a while.

Plus, we had a longer wait time between announcment and release (and then Stateside/Europoor release) than we did with XY, which was only about 9 months.

Longer wait time lead to more hype buildup.

They're my favorites too, OP, tied with Emerald and X

B/W revived Pokemon for me.

So fresh, so beautiful. Fucking amazing, BW2 wasn't as great but was a nice surprise.

Goddanm I love these games so much.

The reason why I love BW so much is probably because the experience was like when I had first played Red/Blue/Yellow.

It was so fresh and the writing while not perfect kept me engaged all the way to the end.

They were just so good, and it really wasn't all that long ago, but thinking about the hype train to it gives me such nostalgia

B/W almost killed pokemon for me. B/W are fine, but it felt like 3 steps back for me. Battle-wise, it looked much better and faster paced, but the apps on the bottom screen and how annoying Team Plasma was. I don't mind Teams and they were a bit better, but I guess taking over the Elite 4 and having the Gym Leaders do something was too much over the top for me, personally.

Those who actually bought them got burned very, very badly. I feel for them. No more berries, no more PWT download tournaments, no more C-Gear or Pokedex skinning, no more hidden abilities, no more bonus musicals, no more Unity Tower, and a whole bunch of missing medals. Emulators and flashcarts are the only way to experience these in 2014 thanks to save editing but those with a genuine cart are left behind with crippled games unless they buy a save dongle. 4th gen is also left in the dust but not as severe as Gen 5 thanks to their stronger post-games.

Eh, the best part of BW1 was the hype train. The games themselves felt lackluster in content, just like XY are now, though they did feel very polished compared to past games and I appreciate that. XY's lacking in that polish which really hampers them.

BW2 was way better, they're easily my favorite Pokemon games. And the hype for that was nearly on par, if only for the novelty of actual numbered sequels.

The downside to me is that since there are so many cutscenes to establish the plot it is not the best to replay. The cutscenes/friendshit is way worse in X/Y though, with a shitty team and plot to go with it. It's like they took my one criticism of Gen V and ran with it...

Gen V was the best Plot wise.
SOME of the pokemon designs though are
the worse to date in my opinion. I loved the game.

The different intro. N's coronation.
N and you in the ferris wheel. Team plasma's plot and Fighting Ghetsis after the elite four was a great surprise that spiked up the difficulty.

After Black/White every game has been dissapointing including x/y (plot wise)

In terms of region - HG/SS (i like that japanese vibe)
Overall it is hard for me to pick a favorite pokemon title, because every gen has some nice things i enjoy. So yeah.

I can trade from my DSTwo to the carts. My carts will be fine, but it does suck that gen5 relied so much on external services. Even though gen4 was also affected by the WFC shutdown, it was hit less hard than gen 3 in the long run because its recurring events (such as berries) are tied to the DS system rather than a battery that not many people will replace.
On a side note, I wish I started Platinum a lot sooner. or at least finished my White version While they're fun games on their own, wifi would have been great to still have.

Thankfully I managed to get really excited about X and Y, and I really love Kalos.

Gen VI has so far had me the hypest. BW was pretty hype too but all the leaks from Yahoo, merchandise, ect. killed it a bit. Then I never even got to actually buy Black or White seeing how the Serebii and his cohorts had the rom up and running literally a day after the game officially released in Japan and English translations only took about three days to do. BW and BW2 are still the only Pokemon main games that I have yet to actually buy because emulation.

Nothing was more hype killing than Gen 4. Jesus Christ going a year without any updates was downright pain-inducing.

I didn't hear about Gen 3 until a few days before release in the US.

Not a lot was really fresh in B/W. It was still the same game with minor changes here and there. Rather, the game was fresh in that it was more linear but made use of the linearity through plot. Although DP proved that you can have plot and not be linear so I don't know what the fuck happened with B/W.

Unless you mean the 154 new Pokemon as being fresh.

The only part I didn't like about B/W was it kinda got boring around the 3rd gym all the way to the fifth. If the gyms were a little bit more separated and the mapping for those ares were different BW would have been my favorite game.

I even felt the same problem with B/W2. The begging with the new area was nice but soon as you reach the third gym it starts to feel meh.

Still has the best protagonist designs though

Man, I broke my DS in about 2008 and missed all of Gen 5 (I went back and replayed them when I got a 3DS). Then I went into XY largely blind, only knowing about Fairy type and having heard about Pokemon Bank and Mega Evolutions but not knowing what they were. I regret it because you miss out on the hype, after 7 months with no updates it feels flat when you get the game. Can't wait for Gen 7 hype, it'll be the first I've experienced since Gen 4.
