Mike and his team were heading back down in the Cave of Origin after pulling off a mostly successful rescue attempt with the Black Mage's help. Garland, one of the Dark Warriors who had joined the fight, had been knocked out in battle and left behind. Given that Garland had had Mike's back at one point, it was time to return the favor. The escape wasn't without its share of hassles; the team had barely gotten away.
Or, most of it, anyway. Paula, Mike's Gardevoir, had mistakenly rushed outside, thinking the majority of combat was taking place out there. With a recent cave-in, she'd been left behind with no proper way to get back in the cave. She'd have to deal with the remaining guard, as well as said guard's Throh, before she could properly escape through a portal opened by one of the Black Mage's Pokemon. To that end, her energy was focused on a Psychic blast aimed at the soldier, intending to knock him out first then deal with his Pokemon. A Fighting Pokemon, after all, was a much less serious threat than a grenade launcher. [0 lowers the soldier's SpDef.]
