If they want to go with having Ash and Serena be canon, which they seem to be kind of pushing, she can pretty much remain goalless and try new shit in the new regions while going with Ash. Sure, they can have her be a little more active in battle, which they seem to be doing, but otherwise, it's alright.
Plus, if they make it canon, they don't have to worry about romance sub-plots again, so there can be focus on the characters doing things in the new regions. Not to mention, you can probably get antics between the new gen girl and Serena.

Obviously the show is about Pokemon and it has to have them, but making it so that it's the only thing that matters can be harmful to how characters are written.
Now with Serena, a ton of people seem to criticizing the very idea of her not having much to do with Pokemon. I'm not saying she's an interesting character because she really isn't, but it's just funny to me that it feels like the fanbase did a complete 180 on their opinions of what the show should be trying to do writing-wise. I think it would be a good thing to make the show so that not every little thing ties back into Pokemon, they just arn't making very much use of it with Serena.
