So if Clefairy had become Pokemon's mascot, and Ash's anime starter in the first episode, as was originally intended, would it be more or less popular than Pikachu is today?

Pokemon would have been a momentary distraction for girls, boys would have avoided it and the franchise would have never taken off in the west.

Pikachu is cute, but it also smites its enemies with lightning, and that makes it appealing to everyone.

They would force it, even if it wasn't. Be that as it may, Clefairy and it's evo aren't nearly as useful as Pika and Rai.

Also a game that was mostly popular between boys in the beginning, Pikachu was the best option since it was a good lure for both male and female public.

All we might have missed without Clefairy as main mascot were probably some Metronome epik gags.
