Haven't played Pokemon since Emerald, but planning on getting ORAS. Should I bother with X/Y in the meanwhile or no? From what I understand, feelings on the game are pretty mixed.

Lots of Pokemon to play with, little to none post game content depending on who you talk to, small handful of new mons. I would say get it if you really want to play it, but ORAS will probably have less features.

they're honestly not mixed. look at how they're professionally reviewed and you will see that they're pretty much universally liked, and most regular folk who played them like them too. /vp/ likes to hate.

huuuuge variety of 'mons, graphics look great, customization is neat and pokemon-amie is rather fun. best game to get into competitive with because it really emphasizes streamlining the experience and making it easier to pop into online battles.

for post-game content, there isn't much, but there rarely is for a first version. extra areas, legends to catch, the battle maison, the looker missions, there still is /some/ stuff to do.

that said, i'd wait out for a potential z. the third version is pretty much always better than the first ones, especially with its post-game content.

I think he means in comparison to XY, not to the original.

And again, didn't play anything past Emerald, but FR/LG were missing some Emerald features (contests notably, I believe), so yeah.
