The attitudes of people would be far different too. Rural MN is full of "stereotypical Northern Minnesota men" who might as well be rednecks in the snow. Then there's the Native American reservations, which are shit. The cities on the other hand are filled with tumblr tier liberalness and a fuck ton of Somalis.
Prominent types of Pokemon in the wild would be Water, Bug, Ice and Grass.
If you want gyms for each town (at least the major ones shown on the map), here's what I would use:
International Falls: Ice - Very far north.
Bemidji: Dark - Has the highest crime rate in the state.
Moorhead: Ground - Spuds
Duluth: Steel - For being in one of the rare mountainous parts of the state (that and Rock is overdone as a gym type).
Minneapolis/St. Paul: Fire - Fairy would also work.
St. Cloud: Flying - Not just because of the name, but with how much partying goes on in this town, everyone might as well be "high in the clouds".
Mankato: Fighting - Wrestling.
Rochester: Poison - Like the town itself.
