Personally? I'm hoping that Gen VII will have a region with at least 16 gyms, possibly 18. I'd love to have a single game with each type getting gym recognition. There are certainly plenty of towns in most games, but some of them serve little to no purpose at all other than a place to heal and potentially bump into your rival.

If they just had a double size gym circuit then we'd have 16 of the 18 types, and the other two could be taken care of in the Elite 4, though I'd prefer gym leaders, especially if we have a way to reliably rematch with them post-game with a high-level team.

Well for Dark type specialists, we've gotten a femme fatale, a guy with a mohawk, and a vampire gambler. None of them except for maybe Grimsley are creepy at all, with Sidney being a pretty good natured guy.

Yeah, Dark-types are kind of built on the concept of being sneaky and bending the rules/cheating. Sucker Punch and Beat Up speak for themselves. See the World Cup for why Bite is considered a sneaky move. The specialists in that type just tend towards the sneakier/dirtier side of pokemon battles. Doesn't mean they're bad people, they just play rough when they face off against you.

Maybe the dad thought he was to strong for you, he thought that maybe you'd be strong enough to challenge his child and also use you to prove himself to the rest. Like he was grooming you by challenging you with grunts to be a worthy opponent, that's why most of the grunts had lame pokemon at first, but it serves as a decoys, the places they invade they weren't trying to take over but plant bugs maybe emp bombs. Or something to throw the region into darkness chaos.

Gyms are often rather based on their leaders than their type. Still doesn't explain why Surge has garbage cans in his gym

Better answer - Johto and Kanto, being contiguous, are constantly becoming similar in terms of species present. During the events of RBY there weren't many Kanto Pokémon in Johto either.
