Tepig was my favorite, makes the first few gyms a breeze so you can stock up on late game mons; unfortunately his defenses are glass and doesn't have a great selection of Fighting type moves.
Snivy and Oshawott are more balanced but I didn't find them as interesting and their movepools are more limited, but they both benefit from good stat boosting moves (especially Coil on Serperior).
