I'm pretty sure you could count the number of people hoping for Mega-Hariyma or Hariyama merchandise on your fucking fingers.There's no real demand for it since the people who are old enough to know what a Hariyama is, probably just buy the games at this point.
Charizard's popular and is marketed and gets lots of love because it has fairly broad appeal. Everyone loves dragons. He's easily recognizable as a Pokemon, even if you haven't played the game in years or at all. From an advertising standpoint this is very good. If your going to make merchandise, you make it of characters that are easily recognizable even to people who only know your product via cultural osmosis for maximum exposure.
That being said, I wouldn't call it pushing if people actually like the character. I think this is just some hipsters throwing a tantrum because its becoming more and more apparent that the "muh churizurd genwunner" doesn't exist anymore.
