I was looking for luvdiscs for the heart scales and got 5 critical captures in a row. I thought I was doing something but was just really lucky.

Absolutely, happened to me several times. Crit, much like a critical hit, isn't a guarantee, just much better odds of a capture.

Critical capture rate is based on how many caught pokemon are in your dex. Maybe you've just caught lots already?

same. I bought 400 Premier Balls thinking it was gonna be like catching Azelf in a normal pokeball Which is hard as fuck but I instead throw two balls at Xerneas and catch him.

I was a tad disappointed. there was no real challenge to it.

Zygarde was a little tricky though

All a Critical Capture does is force the first shake to happen. After that, it still does the checks as usual. So any time a ball made it to 2 shakes, as a Crit capture, would've been a success.

Box legendaries have been made easy to catch since D/P/Pt, probably so as not to interfere with the main story. Side legendaries like the lake trio, zygarde etc. still have low catch rates however.
