I've had a really weird question kind of floating around my head lately-

What makes any particular Pokemon a 'bad' Pokemon? Is there no such thing? Does every Pokemon have a niche of some kind?

>Are there any Pokemon who are truly terrible?

And I don't mean "I don't like such and such Pokemon because reasons" terrible- but objectively completely useless.

Maybe this is dumb, but I'm really just curious.

It's stats. Always the stats. Stunfisk is a good example. That nigger can't even compete with stats that bad and a movepool that shallo.

Luvdisc can give you useful heart scales, that's gotta count for something. In the Pokemon world, they may not be any good for battling, but they do have a niche.

Same for Pokemon that are great at contests or... musicals or are really fucking cute in Amie. Most of them have to be good at SOMETHING.

Except Stunfisk, Stunfisk is irredeemable.

Things that make a pokemon bad:

poor typing
poor bsts
hindering or meh abilities
poor movesets
poor tm/hm compatibility
unappealing design
similar pokemon existing that has less of these traits

the more of these traits a pokemon has, the worse it is.

A pokemon can be bad because of low stats, shitty movepool, or hindering ability.

You can usually use gimmicks to make a bad pokemon usable, but it will never be ideal.

Out of curiousity, do you battle competitively? I dunno, this type of question seems like the type of thing that's incredibly easy to answer if you have experience with competitive battling (specifically OU). There are only certain pokemon that have the stats/movepool/abilities to be able to function in that environment. Certain pokemon are completely outclassed by others in every way, and I think what makes them truly terrible is when they're out classed by so many pokemon that they have virtually no reason to be used.

Spinda has some neat tricks.

Foremost is the ability Contrary, and access to Superpower. So it just keeps getting stronger the more it attacks. And whenever something with intimidate switches in, spinda gets stronger from that.

Paired with sucker punch it's pretty serviceable.

It also gets stuff like hypnosis, trick room, encore, trick, wish, skill swap. It's pretty fun.

Psychic is not a good defensive type, can only use Hidden Power, shameful stats.

You don't need much to start breeding, just get yourself a talonflame with Flame Body and Fly, though access to Kiloude City is pretty important too so you can check your IVs and get friend safari pokemon (they have several guaranteed high IVs, definitely worth it)

Lately, I've been tiering pokémon into six categories.

Tier 1: I would use this Pokémon on my team even if it isn't a good idea strategically - I'll use an Arcanine even if I already have a fire-type on my team.

Tier 2: I would use this Pokémon on my team unless it's a bad idea strategically. If my entire team is weak to Grass, I won't include a Swampert - but otherwise, I will.

Tier 3: If I need this Pokémon for strategic reasons, I'll use it. I used a Swanna as my surf/fly slave and because it made up for most of my team's weaknesses. Most Pokémon fall into this tier.

Tier 4: I'll avoid this Pokémon unless I really need it strategically. If I really need to use a Ludicolo, I will, but I don't like it very much. I'd rather choose something else.

Tier 5: I won't use this Pokémon. It's just outclassed by everything else. Seaking is in this tier, because there's always a better choice.

Tier 6: You'd have to take my family hostage to make me use these. I can't stand Sawk and Throh, so they go here.

pretty much this. i'm fortunate in the way that a lot of my favourite pokemon are actually good, but there are just some i can't stand to use, like watchog and your above fleshrobe 'mons.

I generally call a pokemon bad if It looks unappealing, or it's stats, movepool and ability make it unviable to use. I don't mind bad pokemon that much, and try to use them when possible just in case something awesome happens.
They're only truly, unusably bad when they're completely incapable of battle outside of gimmick sets and look completely unappealing as well.

Finding something appealing is rather subjective. It depends on whether you like it really. For example, I personally don't consider Sunflora bad even though it's got a horrible BST, just because I like how happy it looks.

To be completely useless, a pokemon needs to be utterly outclassed by a different one. Nothing this pokemon can do is special, and a single other pokemon can do this job superior. Note that the two pokemon in comparison need to have the same typing, and the useless pokemon needs to have the same ability or an utterly useless ability.
Aside from preevolutions, unown is the only pokemon I can think of that there is no reason you'd ever use it. It can do nothing that Azelf, Uxie, or Mespirit can't.

Also you can use it with scald, toxic and t-wave, I guess.
Yeah, stats suck but it has high HP.
It can cripple someone before going down usually.

The team Combo is the key. I use one with obvious Focus shash, but toghether withTogekiss can kill at least 2 pokemon.

All Pokemon are somehow able to defeat another, even if it requires immense handicaps. Nothing is truly without a use. However, it would not be impossible for Game Freak to make such a Pokemon that has absolutely no offensive options. Even Magikarp eventually learns tackle, so there is still room for Game Freak to make such a gimmick 'mon. And I actually think that would be an interesting addition to the meta provided it had a large status movepool. As it stands, all Pokemon have a use
There is also no such thing as a design that appeals to nobody.
You could take a turd, add a face, and there are people that will legitimately like it. As such, there is no way to 100% fail with a design. Mind you that said design would be panned and hated by many fans, that would not mean the design is objectively unappealing. That said, what do you all think of my fakemon?
Also I do not and will not use this as a way to excuse Game Freak creating bad designs. It's impossible for them or anyone else to outright fail, but they can/have/will still make something awful.
