That's what everyone thought back when Mega Mewtwo Y was revealed (before we knew it was a Mega Evo).

Then Lucario, Charizard, and Greninja were revealed, and the hope for Mewtwo started vanishing.

The leaks only mentioned newcomers (although the last one mentioned Lucas being cut) and Mewtwo isn't a newcomer, so he could be coming back.
Not seeing it happen though, I think Jigglypuff will be the last Pokémon-slot.
