What is stupid is when Smogonfags claim EVERY good OU Pokemon is their favorite. That is, the better it is, the more they like it. There is no way they legitimately like all of them, and not just favor it simply because it makes their cookie-cutter team work.

Copy-pasted teams are the ones that get destroyed the easiest. Also, in a game where typings cover other typings, it's not difficult to imagine that out of 50 or so viable Pokemon in a tier, a quite a few of them are commonly teamed up because they have synergy. Having a common core like Deo-D/Bisharp/Ghost type is almost the same as most Garchomps running Stone Edge for coverage. It's all in service of making your team as hard to counter as possible.

Are you serious? For instance, most Smogonfags would claim Talonflame is one of their favorites, and Talonflame doesn't require more than pressing 'Brave Bird' and winning

The reason why a Pokemon would be S Rank or close to it in OU is precisely because it isn't hard to use and/or doesn't require support to do its job. This is stated by Smogon themselves. This is not the same as liking something powerful because it requires skill, as that's a matter of high risk/high reward. This is people liking a Pokemon simply because it can fill almost any role in a team without any consideration to strategy.

True, you can pull lower tier Pokemon up and use them in a team to full a role that's required, but typically there's a reason they're in that lower tier. Unless it's something that fills a very specific niche (for example I use a Gligar in UU because I needed both a physical wall that could heal itself and hazard removal), there's usually something within the top 50 in a tier that serves a similar role but performs better and needs less team support. OU Pokemon are OU by usage first, and performance second. The Pokemon that have the highest usage are obviously the ones that perform better since it's a competitive environment, but there are exceptions. Ever wondered why BL is so large this gen? Things that are otherwise usable in OU and broken in UU would be UU because their usage is too low. Things like Manaphy, Magnezone, and Thundurus-T which are perfectly usable but unpopular have fallen to BL where things that didn't belong in OU stayed there for too long. Electivire is RU when it's bottom of the barrel garbage that should be NU but is still in RU because people use it.

People loved Bisharp before it went OU and the reason it jumped in usage was because new mechanics and low representation by its counters made it worthwhile. It's not as good as people make it out to be, but it's used very commonly because people love it.

Liking a Pokemon should not come only from its usability. I won't deny that some of my favorite Pokemon have actually come from how usable they were; however, with time, I actually started liking them for their design, what they were meant to be, etc.

Say, Magnezone. It was a pretty useful 'mon back in 4th gen. I saw people talking about it, and decided to give it a try. Sure enough, I ended up loving it.

Now in 6th gen, Magnezone has fallen into obscurity and no one even acknowledges it. However, I didn't stop liking it because of how viable it was, because I had already come to appreciate the other things that make that Pokemon be what it is. I even started liking the whole evolutionary line.

Again, the problem with a lot of Smogonfags is that they'll never stop seeing numbers, and base their favorites solely on viability. I may be wrong, but what I've come to understand from them is that some of them (not necessarily all of them) will never be capable of actually coming to appreciate something for what it is.

Many of my favourite Pokémon nowadays I grew to like because of how reliable they proved in competitive play: Weezing, Clefable (in Gen V), Vaporeon, Scolipede… I can recall many interesting battles with Pokémon of those species, so they've really grown on me.

When you ask a person what their favorite Pokemon is, how often is it that their favorite Pokemon is either one they commonly use or have some other attachment to? How often do those people use their favorite even if it's not all that great? My favorite Pokemon is Carnivine, and I would never use it in a competitive capacity because it's utter garbage. But if you asked me out of the blue what my favorite Pokemon was, if I didn't have so much of an attachment to Carnivine I would probably immediately think of one of the last Pokemon I used. On another day I might say Victini, or Aerodactyl, because I use them in my main teams and love how they perform.

Favorites are subjective. If you're faulting players that use Pokemon primarily for how they perform for liking Pokemon that perform well, you're thickheaded or care too much about other peoples' opinions.

This is true, but making 718 pokemon even remotely balanced with one another would be impossible, for both the devs and for players to keep track of. It's a necessary evil IMO (and if it's not one you want to deal with, play a lower tier on Smogon.)

Personally, what I do is play competitively with just my friends on cartridge. It's fun, and you can use a variety of things in a friendlier environment.

You also have more variety because there are so many different tiers. You can play with your bros in lower tiers, the broken stuff in ubers, level 5 unevolved mons in LC, weird shit in hackmons and AAA, etc. Sims add balance and variety while giving you matchmaking services.

The trick is backing up whatever your bro is with support or having something that synergizes well with it. Though personally it's less of a problem for me because I don't feel a need to use a 'bro', there are just a few Pokemon I hate enough to never use no matter how good it gets. Charizard for example, most of my team is dedicated to killing Charizard just because I can't stand losing to one. Fuck the digivolving genwun worst starter.
