I asked /vp/ this sometime last year before X and Y came out, and if I remember correctly they said that Venusaur, Feraligatr, Swampert, Infernape, and Samurott are the strongest starters in their respective gens. What do you think?

"Strongest" doesn't necessarily mean whichever has the highest Attack/Special Attack, but whichever one can dish out the most damage.
