My sister / friend I brought might have already had the interest. I bought Mario Kart 8, so did my friend because he likes the franchise and can play together.
Pokemon is no different, one or two versions. If they didn't discuss it, we could end up with all the same copy. But, as GF intended, we'd instead discuss which version we'd prefer for whatever reasons and trade each other goodies we might have wanted from the other.
This, if anything, is how they're selling more with two copies. They're promoting a more social aspect to the game than your standard one.
