Considering how dark is considered the deceiving type, how about a gym where the top screen shows a maze and the bottom screen shows a different (fake) maze. The bottom screen would show NPCs but the top maze would be the "real" maze to navigate. After each trainer battle, the bottom maze would change and appear more and more like the top (real) maze.

A gym modeled after a street alley, with a pompadour-toting greaser as the leader.

The trainers hide in the shadows to ambush the player as they walk down the alley, and if the player's team is overleveled, the leader's goons ambush the player just before talking to the leader to "beat them up", scaling the team's HP for a more even fight.

Also the gym's trainers are all named for West Side Story characters.
