Serious question.

How popular is Mewtwo outside of Genwunfags and the Smash fanbase? I ask this because I rarely see anyone outside of these two groups that cares about him.

Hard to tell, since Gen one fags and Smash fags are going to vote in polls without much knowledge of the previous gens. And legit, some arguments by Smashfags is that Mewtwo is familiar with people who stopped playing Pokemon then.

True, but you know what i mean. Mewtwos stats are mainly in special attack. I dont play competively, but im pretty sure that there are a few ubers too that have better stats.

Also, in OP's post, I think by popular he meant how liked he is, not if he's competively viable.

Not if we're counting Mewtwo's mega forms. Then he has the highest base stat total out of any Pokemon. And the X form skyrockets his physical appeal (though 110 attack on his normal form was still usable). Just because of getting 2 megas, Mewtwo is extremely viable in ubers simply because you don't know if you'll be fighting a special, physical, or mixed one.

Mewtwo is one of my favortite pokemon, genwunner here.

He reminds me of when the games were a bit less formulaic when it came to how to design the world or stories. Mewtwo's story was grimdark as fuck, and the burnt out labratory and the idea of a super intelligent mutant freak suffering in a cave somewhere after murdering a bunch of humans struck me as cool as a little kid.

I like his design, I like his backstory, I only wish he was shitty so I could use him on teams.

That being said, the grimdark is strong with me, some of my other favorites include Weavile, Crawdaunt and Mawile

Your newfaggotry is showing OP. Mewtwo stats are maximum. He is the best special sweeper in Ubers. He is fast and hits hard. He has the best Psychic attack in the game with a base power of 100 and hits defenses so he always wins CM wars. And that's without taking into account his broken Mega Forms. The only problem with Mewtwo is that psychic type is kinda bad in ubers.

I think that's really the main difference between Mewtwo and most other legendaries. Even Ho-Oh and Lugia, who share the same BST numbers, can't do anything they want and actually pull it off.

Out of all of them, only Arceus and Mew could hope to actually surpass it in utility.

Mewtwo is literally the most pleb pokemon. Hes the go-to favorite for people who dont actually play the games and just watched the movie. Even in gen 1 he was popular becauss psychic was broken and he had no counters

Considering that GF found it popular enough to give it two Mega Evolutions and a dickload of merchandise, I'd say he's got popularity outside of genwunners and meleefags, I'd say a bulk comes from animefags as well, Pokemon did have a peak in popularity during the Kanto games and Mewtwo's movie after all.

Pretty much this. For many casual fans Mewtwo is the big bad of Pokemon. Mewtwo is the most popular legendary Pokemon by far. Along with Pikachu, Charizard and Mewtwo are the pokemon most people know about.

Stats are important but they aren't everything. What about the moves? Mewtwo has unsurpassed type coverage in its move pool - what coverage moves it can fit on its movelist only depends on what pokemon you expect to face - and Psystrike lets it hit hard physically as well as specially with no investment in attack. Mewtwo is a fucking monster.
