Just started watching xy series of the anime and... What's the deal with macaroons all the god damn time? and why do they constantly pronounce it wrong?

Okaay, here's the deal. Macaroons and macarons are actually different things.

What you have in your image is a bunch of macarons. They're really popular in Japan and they're what pokepuffs are based on, so of course the anime features them prominently.

A macaroon is actually different. You might think of a coconut macaroon, for example.

Well, I just assumed that since Serena makes a shitton of them (as Dawn and may did for the pokemon treats in ages past), and they share the neon colors and general appearance of macarons, and the fact that Japan fucking loves macarons, that that's what pokepuffs were based on.

I was in Paris this past Christmas and a macaroon is not that same as a macaron which is a traditional French pastry and is actually fucking delicious. I doubt anything outside of Paris compares to a real macaron but Pokepuffs are definitely inspired by those.

The script was still written in Japanese first and then translated into the other languages, presumably without Gamefreak's Japanese staff doublechecking every single fucking translation.

And Gamefreak called them Pofflés, so soufflés they are.

Macarons are good. The "buns" are soft and fluffy with a crunchy outer layer. And the filling has a chewy, caramel-like texture. All that packed into an inch and a half diameter.

Never tried a fresh one, so I won't judge those, but store-bought are dry and tasteless. Bit of an almond flavour, but more in the "this is probably poisonous" sense than anything.

"Chou crème" (not "shu cream") is the Japanese shortform for Chou à la crème, which isn't the same as profiteroles.
